Matthew has recently completed his Part II MArch course at Kingston University. Matthew’s fourth year focused on the design of a winery in the Azores, dealing with issues of landscape, local culture and industry whilst his final year thesis explored the connection between the city and the port in Naples, Italy through the design of a new market. Over the two years, Matthew developed his existing skills as well as learning new skills to improve his reading of context both socially and physically in order to design appropriately.
Prior to that, Matthew spent just under three years in practice at Trethowan Architecture in Melbourne, Australia working on a variety of residential and commercial projects. This has given him valuable experience of many design techniques as well as the day to day aspects of running a practice. The projects ranged from a flagship store design for Chanel to the reworking of a beach house. Matthew initially worked on detail design using AutoCAD, Sketchup and various rendering tools. Matthew developed these skills and progressed to being responsible for concept design, design development and the preparation of planning permit, building permit, tender and construction packages. He mostly worked directly with a project architect and initiated the design of a luxury pool and BBQ area under the supervision of a senior partner, working directly with the client and contractors to deliver the project. Many of Matthew’s roles included aspects of project management and practice administration.
Matthew graduated, with honours, from the University of Portsmouth in 2011 and picked up many skills during this stage of his education. Matthew developed knowledge of the design process including the importance of context and site analysis, design development and representation. He learned skills such as CAD drawing, hand drawing and model making as tools to convey ideas.
In 2008, before university, Matthew had a Gap Year, which consisted of 3 months working at the property developers Barratt and 5 months visiting Africa, The Middle East, Asia, the South Pacific and America. He had some fantastic experiences and made many friends around the world, drawing inspiration from the different cultures he encountered on his travels.
Matthew is bright, competent, very determined and works well in a team environment. He has many varied interests across sport, music and technology.
